Research Synopsis:
My work is concerned with the in vitro characterization of the synaptic properties of some little-investigated diencephalic pathways including the mammillothalamic pathways and the lemniscal/paralamniscal somatosensory pathways which connect the trigeminal nuclei to the somatosensory thalamic nuclei. In doing so I employ the newly developed autofluorescence imaging (AFI) technique which allows me to examine the viability of such connections in mouse brain slices. Subsequently I use these slices to employ whole-cell recordings, in conjunction with pharmacological manipulations, in order to examine the synaptic properties of the above pathways.
